On 7 June 2023, Wildlife Crime Prevention (WCP) Zambia launched the Environmental Crime Journalism Fellowship (ECJ) to strengthen the capacity of young Zambian journalists in reporting on environmental and climate issues. The fellowship is designed to provide media professionals with in-depth knowledge, practical skills, and ethical guidelines to improve the quality and accuracy of environmental crime reporting.

Building Expertise Through Immersive Learning

The ECJ Fellowship offers interactive learning experiences, fieldwork opportunities, and expert-led training sessions to help journalists understand the complexities of wildlife crime, illegal logging, climate justice, and conservation challenges. Through these activities, participants gain the tools needed to combat misinformation, investigate critical issues, and deliver well-balanced, fact-based reporting that raises public awareness.

Objectives of the Fellowship

The programme is structured to achieve the following key goals:

  • Promote in-depth, well-researched environmental journalism, ensuring accurate and compelling storytelling.
  • Enhance public engagement by using powerful narratives in both visual and non-visual formats.
  • Support local and regional journalists in covering environmental crime and conservation topics.
  • Expose and highlight pressing environmental challenges affecting Zambia, bringing them to national and international attention.
  • Increase the availability of credible, diverse, and inclusive environmental narratives in media spaces.
  • Foster a more diverse, equitable, and accessible media environment that encourages broad participation in conservation discourse.
  • Equip journalists with essential skills for high-quality, responsible, and ethical reporting on environmental issues.

By investing in media professionals, the ECJ Fellowship plays a crucial role in amplifying environmental awareness, strengthening investigative journalism, and driving meaningful change in Zambia’s conservation landscape.
